VALIE EXPORT's debut film, shot with a camera given to her as a gift by her sister, was made in Switzerland, inspired by her intense study of Heidegger during this period. The N8mm film demonstrates EXPORT's interest in questions of representation and semiotic systems, in the relationship between dead matter and the body, and between art history and the present. In a beam of light the head of a statue can be seen, along with a likeness of EXPORT, wearing the wig she later donned in 1968 in "Touch Cinema," as a living, contemporary, female counterpart to the traditional bust."
